Solutions
Power quality failure looks different in each industry, but the operational problem is the same. Facilities run dedicated electrical infrastructure, carry motor-heavy or nonlinear loads and absorb unmeasured losses. Many reports use ten-minute averages while sub-cycle distortion heats transformers and trips breakers without warning. On each site we measure the current waveform at the panel and correct it inside the same cycle. That is Software-Defined Electricity (SDE).
The seven sectors below reduce to the same arithmetic. Their pages describe facilities that run their own electrical infrastructure and carry motor-heavy or nonlinear load. Each facility answers to a limit set by a standard, a tariff, a permit, a law or the temperature rating of its own equipment.
Each sector page follows the same plan. It names the physical rule for its sector. It shows the equipment in use today, the equipment that comes next and where correction fits on both. The figures in the table below come from these pages, and each page lists its sources.
Sector Benchmark
| Sector | The documented problem | What it costs or risks | What SDE does there |
|---|---|---|---|
| Industrial & Manufacturing | Our survey of one plant read 27.4% fifth-harmonic current on a drive panel. | An average 7,365 dollars per sag or short-interruption shutdown, self-reported by 33 Brazilian plants. | Corrects harmonic and unbalanced load current at the panel. |
| Water & Wastewater | Power factor averaged about 0.72 on a water plant motor control center. | Georgia Power’s 2025 tariff bills 0.42 dollars per excess kilovolt-ampere reactive. | Supplies reactive and harmonic current at each motor control center. |
| Data Centers & Compute | A university UPS input read up to 14.83% total demand distortion, over its limit. | About 3,800 megawatts of load transferred to backup power in one 2026 grid fault. | Supplies reactive and harmonic rack current at the panel. |
| Defense & Critical Infrastructure | TM 5-689 puts theoretical neutral current with harmonics at least 1.73 times phase current. | In fiscal 2013, DOD-reported utility disruptions of 8-plus hours averaged about 220,000 dollars daily. | Supplies triplen harmonic and unbalanced current at the panel. |
| Maritime | A ship’s bow thruster bus ran 12.6% voltage distortion, over the class limit. | At 0.7 to 0.8 power factor, shore supply delivers 25% to 43% extra kilovolt-amperes. | Supplies the non-working part of load current at the panel. |
| Microgrids & Storage | A 2022 study measured an 11 volt difference between two microgrid phase voltages. | An islanded test microgrid needed about 50 seconds to resynchronize with the grid. | Supplies reactive, harmonic and unbalanced current at the panel. |
| Blackstart | Transformer inrush current peaks within the first half cycle, about 8 milliseconds. | A modeled IEEE 123-node feeder block waited 2 hours 45 minutes for energy margin. | Supplies reactive current at the load instead of the source. |
Two paths, one problem
Every sector page is organized the same way, and the organization is the argument. After the summary and the physics, each page describes two equipment paths, today and the future. Path one, today, is the equipment a facility runs now: generators, UPS, transfer switch, motor control centers, drives, soft starters, capacitors, filters and reactors. Path two, the future, is what arrives next: active front ends, grid-forming batteries, DC buses, shore power, solar and storage, AI halls, installation microgrids and the ride-through rules now arriving. The hardware differs on the two paths. Each page then argues the same thing on both, in the section titled “Why SDE is critical on both paths”. What the load draws is what the source has to carry.
Who sets the number
Each sector page carries one number the facility has to hit. On four of the seven pages that number is set outside the facility. Maritime answers to a class society rule and a naval standard. Water and wastewater answers to a wastewater permit and the recommended standards behind it, and a utility tariff bills its excess reactive demand. Defense answers to a federal availability statute. Data centers answer to a grid operator requirement, and a federal order now directs national standards to follow. On the other three the limit belongs to the equipment. Industrial plants answer to the insulation temperature of a winding, microgrids to the overheating of a generator under light load on harmonic current, and blackstart to the current limit of an inverter.
“The progressive development of man is vitally dependent on invention.”
Nikola Tesla
Seven sectors answer to seven rules, and each rule concerns the same waveform. The Technology hub covers the components of that waveform.
